when we lived free in their canopies
as far as eye could see from sea to sea?
all the leaves, all the leaves!
with their strange filigree
that cut like little saws
into the sky’s great blue belly
stretched above us where we lay
until the light bled over us?
then there was nothing left to say
in the sumptuous day
before time was even born or could slip away
but “we are happy, we are happy”

yes tonight I remember and feel free...

like I could reach out and feel the nearest star
or I could wait out the night in the nearest bar
until some light comes through the window
from near or far
to touch the potion in my glass
how it sparkles, it sparkles!

how it burns the memory of that crowded day:
the seconds hatched like a buzzing flies,
a horde of minutes that drove us away
to the place we never thought we could play or pray
ever again, ever again!
